Dennis Bays attended Tell City High School and graduated in 1955 with Varsity Letters in Baseball, Football and Basketball. He suffered a significant knee injury during his senior football season but recovered enough to play as a guard on the basketball team. Tell City upset #1 Ranked Rockport 37-35 in the Sectional in 1955. Rockport had beat them by 50 points three weeks prior. His Marksmen basketball team won all 4 games and claimed the Sectional Title that year. He then received an Academic Scholarship to Evansville College which is now The University of Evansville, Coach Bays took a teaching position with the EVSC in 1960. While at Central high School from 1960-62, worked with Tex Graham and John Wessel with the Basketball program. In 1962, the year Harrison High School opened, he transferred there. From 1962 to 1986 he held the following coaching positions: Volunteer Asst. Basketball Coach (1962-1964); Freshman Basketball Coach (1964-1970); Junior Varsity Basketball Coach to Lowell Galloway, Mel Garland and Steve Fritz (1970-1982); In 1982, he was selected as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at age 45, then the oldest head coach appointed by the EVSC. In 1986, he stepped down to become the Athletic Director and maintained that position until his retirement at the end of the 2000 school year. Coach Bays impacted lives for over 40 years on and off the Basketball Court.
