Jack Butcher graduated from Loogootee High School in 1951 as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Leading his team in assists and defense, a three-year starter at Memphis State in career sandwiched around a tour of duty in the Korean War. Jack was an NCAA all-regional selection as a junior. A year later, he led the Tigers to runner-up spot in NIT, all-NIT selection. Jack turned down an offer from the Boston Celtics to return to his southern Indiana hometown to pursue coaching. He had four unbeaten seasons, seven regional championships and in 1970 and ’75 he won semi state championships that gave the Lions two trips to the Final Four. The ’75 team, which included Butcher’s son, Bill, went undefeated all the way to the state championship game.
